English Dub Review: Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury “A Gloomy Song”

Overview:

Elan goes ahead with his plan to challenge Suletta to a duel. He wants the Aerial if he wins but what could Suletta possibly want? On top of that, the duel will be in space and Aerial doesn’t have the type of thrusters to compete with Pharact.

Our Take:

This anime is going to take the “Happy Birthday” song and turn it into one of the creepiest songs known to man. Two out of the three times its been sung in this show it has invovled death somehow and I also feel terrible for Suletta. She managed to get through to Elan but since he is a clone of the real Elan or a double or something he had to be put down after losing. If you have any familiarity with the Mobile Suit Gundam universe you would know that it will probably only get darker from here.

The mobile suit combat is a still a joy to watch, the lighting and everything was fantastic. This being the first battle in space since the prologue definitely helped. Aerial’s funnels seem like an instant win button so I would like to see Suletta tested a little more but other than that I have really enjoyed the battles. Gundam does mecha combat more realistically than a lot of other anime especially with how they touch on the horrors of war. I think everyone should continue to keep an eye on this one, especially with the second cour starting up soon.
