English Dub Review: Mars Red “A Midsummer Night’s Dream Gone By”
Overview:
Kurusu, Suwa, and the rest of the gang are looking for a leg up on the vampire squad. Takeuchi has been working on something that could potentially age vampires. This would be helpful for the ones that were turned as children since life is hardest for them. Aoi convinces Defrott to put on the play “Orpheus” and he agrees as long as he can tweak the ending. Unfortunately, Aoi gets kidnapped by Rufus who plans to kill Defrott. Maeda shows up saying he intends to eliminate all vampires.
Our Take:
Rufus is being built up to be the main villain since it seems he has even been pulling the general’s strings. It looked like he was about to have Defrott killed until Maeda showed up. I was really excited to see Maeda again but good lord how long are they planning on letting the anticipation build? Plus he mentioned wanting to eliminate all vampires… does that mean Kurusu and everyone else as well? If so that could create some interesting drama.
This was a much slower episode than the previous ones. Setting up all the different parties and their conflicts to intersect. I love it when shows do that so I hope the payoff is good. Though once again we seem to be drifting away from Kurusu, and with as much build-up Maeda is getting you have to wonder if he isn’t the main character.
Kurusu mentions Aoi in this episode and if I’m not mistaken that is the first time he has since he became a vampire. The thing that intrigues me about these two (and also scares me) is the way this is based on a play that lends itself to tragic romance. I can’t think of too many plays that have a romance that doesn’t end tragically. One of the most famous plays “Romeo and Juliet” of course ending tragically.
We will see what Maeda has in store for everyone now that he’s been turned. I’ve been waiting for three episodes for him to come back so if something doesn’t happen next week I am going to be upset. This show has been a pleasant surprise so far so I’m not too worried about that. The anticipation just makes things better after all.
