English Dub Review: Infinite Dendrogram “King of Destruction”

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Although Ray is successful in destroying Franklin’s monster from the previous episode, it’s not without consequences as he sustains severe injuries and falls unconscious. Liliana casts a healing spell that keeps Ray from dying, but she is unable to completely heal him. Franklin reveals the monster Ray destroyed was actually a lo-tier creature he created for the invasion and he uses a detonator to activate a series of bombs he planted all over the Altar, But unfortunately for Franklin, this heavily backfires…

As Rook has captured Hugo, he makes him realize that Franklin never intended to end the Altar-Dryfe war with minimal casualties. Franklin summons his Embryo, Pandemonium, and sends an army of suicidal monsters to attack Gideon, but Ray awakens and takes on Franklin’s monster in order to buy enough time for his allies to prepare a counterattack. With the help of Rook, Marie, and a group of players, Ray is able to hold the line. Franklin realizes that with so many players assisting Ray is a clear indicator that Hugo must have betrayed him, and the episode ends when Shuu revealing himself to be more than what he lets on.

Our Take

All the major characters come together for one big showdown. Now that we’ve reached the endgame, it’s nice to see how everything has come together for the climax. The real highlight of the episode, though, has to be Shuu, who proves how big the gap between Ray and himself is. Despite all the delays and technical limitations this show has endured, the show can deliver when it really counts.

I think the only minor complaint I have against this episode is the antagonist. Franklin has, these elaborate schemes but each of them feels more ridiculous and contrived than the last. There’s a point where Franklin’s plans stop being a threat and begin to strain suspension of disbelief. I get that he must present himself as a really big threat to be taken seriously, but he feels more like an obstacle for the protagonist to overcome and not some upper-tier Supervillain Thanos or something.

With just one more episode left, I can only hope it at least delivers a satisfying conclusion.
