English Dub Review: How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom “No Place of Joy Hath a Soldier”

Overview:

Gaius leads an invasion force from Amidonia into the kingdom and lays siege to the city of Altomura. Meanwhile, in Randel, the Forbidden Army constructs a fort from which they engage Georg’s forces, while Red Dragon City receives its own surprise…

Our Take:

I was wondering if Souma would be able to show off some genius in battle too. Turns out he definitely can and I’m actually impressed with his ideas. Who would think to bring a whole battleship onto land to fight an air force? I know I wouldn’t but that’s probably why I’m not the king of a fantasy world. Among other reasons I’m sure…

This episode was heavy on screentime for the three dukes. There was General Carmine being fierce like a lion, Excel and her umm… assets. Then we got some more time with the leader of the air force Castor. I really like his character so far, he’s a bit on the dumb side but in a noble sticks to their principles sort of way and I can respect that.

Jason Liebrecht voices Castor and you all know I love his work. I don’t know why but his work here really reminds me of his role of Zeke Yeager in Attack on Titan. He just has this calm before the storm vibe I really like, like he’s going to blow up at any second. I hope we get more of all the dukes to be honest, I feel like Georg and Excel have a lot more to be explored.

I feel like the war is just getting started but it’s anything but conventional. Amidonia seems like the typical bad guys but this show has had a couple surprises so maybe there will be some there too. I am pretty sure this show is bi-weekly right now so I guess we will see how good of a military strategist Souma is two weeks from now.
