English Dub Review: Getter Robo Arc “The Children of Destiny”

Overview:

Takuma and Baku ride back to the lab with Kamui, who doesn’t like being stared at. Turns out they are all three destined and chosen by Getter. Getter has three forms so, therefore, needs three pilots. Their first test flight doesn’t go well but it could have been much worse. While fighting with some other pilots the enemy aliens invade. Will they be able to form Getter in time?

Our Take:

Ya know… this show might end up being pretty good. If you like mechs but also like the old style this might be your thing. But even though it still has the old style that’s not to say it isn’t catered to adults. There are quite a few F-bombs in this episode and it seems like it might be a trend. So, if the animation style makes you think this might be meant for kids don’t let that fool you.

I want to talk about sound for a bit. There are a few soundtracks and sound effects that seem to be pulled straight from shows from the ’80s. I personally love it and find it nostalgic so it’s a plus for me but I wanted to point it out for people who might not be into that. Also, I really like Andrew Love and Scott Gibbs in this. I think their characters are gonna have interesting chemistry and they are great voice actors to bring that out.

Speaking of their chemistry, I think we can all guess where Takuma and Kamui’s relationship is headed. Sure, they hate each other now but they are going to be rivals that become friends just watch. I have watched enough anime to see that coming a mile away. I am a sucker for character arcs like that so I am pumped for it. The way Takuma tricks Kamui into fighting the other pilots was hilarious.

I definitely enjoyed the second episode more. As I mentioned last week I haven’t seen any of this series. So far I am not feeling lost. Sure there are some characters that I have a feeling are more important cause of their past but I think that’s okay. I am still enjoying it and would recommend it so far.
