English Dub Review: Dragon Goes House-Hunting: “My First Home”

Overview: Letty (Michael Kovach) finally gets his dream home he has been wishing for since his journey began. But things take a turn for the worst for the red dragon when Dearia (Steven Kelly) assigns him some bodyguards bringing a chaotic end to his peaceful respite.

Our Take: A lady in a painting that reads your embarrassing poetry. If that doesn’t make you equally curious yet charmed, I don’t know what will. As the kick off to Letty finally beginning his home building project, it’s this type of random and quirky gags that shows how House-Hunting is continuously building on t’s repertoire of humor. But then of course, there is the good old fashioned standby of our Dragonman Crybaby. Coupled with Letty constantly being incapable of doing literally anything constructive in the building process of his new home and you can’t help but laugh at his constant bewilderment.

Then things only excel from there as Letty receives company in fanboys and underlings. Letty just being thrown from one charade into the next is when the humor is at its peak because it really just lets loose and allows for the zany  situations to play out for themselves. They move seamlessly and flow naturally with various hilarious situations like three tough beastman gushing over Letty for simply being a dragon and thinking he must be tough or gnomes beating him up for shoddy painting. Or there is the caricatured self-righteous heroes labeling Letty with a cringey title and the character himself being self-aware and poking fun at the common genre it’s inspired by. Part of me wanted the show to stick with the dragon lord subplot, simply for the sake of even more fun hijinks. But the show builds the pranks dished out to Letty so effortlessly that I can not imagine that it will be a problem in the future.

Lastly, while the increased friendship between Dearia and Letty is sweet, especially due to how calming and therapeutic Steven Kelly is able to become during their heart to hearts, it still needs to evolve. For the most part, it always feels like the same old shtick with Dearia’s warm sentiments built solely on his last dragon friend only. So much so that it feels like the series true name is That Time My Past Friend Used To Be a Dragon So That Is Why I Give a Crap About You

Dragon Goes House-Hunting continues to be a fun and enjoyable romp with clever humor backed by a funny lead character. If it can better refine Dearia’s development, it will make a name for itself like the plethora of fantasy pop culture it likes to wink and nod at.
