English Dub Review: Dragon Ball Super “Impossible to Dodge! The Menace of the Stealth Attack!”

And the Universe numbers keep dwindling…

After the removal of Universe 2 and 6, Vegeta begins the battle overpowering the Universe 3 warrior Katopesla and drives him to the edge of the ring. Of course, is no pushover and is able to catch himself, but is somehow knocked over the edge and eliminated by an unseen entity leading to Vegeta and Gohan also being attacked by the same entity afterward, Vegeta is able to stop himself from going over the edge, while Piccolo catches Gohan putting the two on high alert. Android 18 is also attacked but in a big reveal, it turns out to be one of the missing Universe 4 fighters known as Gamisaras who has invisibility powers that are conveyed with visual effects that felt reminiscent of the Predator movies. It’s quite a tension-filled scene as Gohan creates a cloud of dust in an effort to make him easy to spot, which allows Piccolo to easily eliminate Gamisaras.

Undaunted, The Universe 4 God Quitela orders the remaining Universe 4 team to step their game up in which one of their warriors named “Shantza” generates a dome that covers the Universe 7 team and manifests illusions of the defeated fighters from the erased universes. However, Piccolo is no fool and easily spots Shantza and blasts him off the ring, which eliminates him putting things back to normal, but it’s here when they encounter Universe 4’s last fighter, Damon, We the audience are also left to assume he has invisibility power too since no one can see him, As exemplified when Piccolo is able to sense Damon’s attacks, he proves unable to land a hit and Piccolo is consequently knocked him out of the ring with now 5 fighters left on Universe 7’s team are still active.

Through keen observation, Android 17 discovers the truth and exposes Damon as a tiny bug-like creature rather than an invisible person, which explains why none of the fighters were able to land a hit on the tiny bastard. To solve this problem, Goku creates a series of shock waves that launch Damon into the air, which cancels out his agility and allows Android 17 to trap the tiny bastard in a miniature force field and kicks him out of the ring to eliminate him. With all of their fighters eliminated, the episode ends when Quitela out of desperation attempts to erase everyone before his own erasure, but let’s just say the Zeno-Twins aren’t having it…

Our Take

While It was nice seeing Universe 7 making quick work of the Universe 4 fighters, it also means we’re getting ever closer to the climax since we are now left with 3 universes. Though as someone who’s watched Dragonball Z growing up, the one part that bothered me the most was Piccolo lamenting that he wasn’t able to hear the enemy… I mean, aren’t Namekians suppose to have super-hearing or something? That line felt off like the writers didn’t do their homework on their own prominent characters of Dragonball Lore which you’d think a major detail like that would’ve been brought to their attention a lot sooner.

I guess this is my 2nd biggest problem with this tournament aside from the inconsistency of Goku’s condition is that no one outside of Universe 7 ever does anything until it’s their turn to be part of the plot. It’s like they’re just sitting there waiting for a roll call. And where the fuck is Frieza during the proceedings? I get that he’s a selfish unrepentant Asshole, but even he has something to lose or gain if he helps. He was promised that he’d be resurrected if they win and yet rarely makes an effort, or whenever he feels like it.

Of course, we have a long way to go before a true winner is decided so let’s see what happens next.
