English Dub Review: Dr. Stone: Stone Wars: “Call from the Dead”

Overview: Senku (Aaron Dismuke), Gen (Brandon McInnis) and the gang use their cellphone to communicate to Taiju (Ricco Fajardo) and Yuzuharu’s (Brittany Lauda) bodyguard, Nikki, in the hopes of turning her to their side

Our Take: After finding themselves trapped in enemy territory, Gen, Magma and Chrome do their best to escape. Their plan is one of the shining examples of what Dr. Stone does best. Being really damn smart. As evident from the clever tactics from Chrome to allow Gen to escape from Ukyo. The unique way of thinking a way out of a problem is what makes its fun to watch and engaging as you never know what inventive plan the Kingdom of Science has up its sleeve.

What it also had under its sleeve, fittingly, was a scheme to trick someone to believe Gen was actually the American popstar (if the very obvious, very Southern accent didn’t tell you that), Lillian Weinberg. This series is so intelligent it even comes with a clever way of explaining the convenience behind Nikki being a hardcore fan. Dumb luck, of course, what else could it be? In a show that goes through the ins and outs of explaining the process of every step of each advancement, it’s refreshing for the series to come up with a simple reasoning in  other respects and also quite ironic coming from a series with science as its foundation.

Besides being intelligently written, you’re almost assuredly going to laugh every time you watch this show, and this week’s episode is no exception. Besides the amazing comedic juxtaposition of Nikki loving Lillian, her stan questions involving her cup sizes and album sales make for more of the hysterical humor the series has trademarked at this point. What helps elevate them even more so is the insane absurdity of Senku figuring out an equation for it and going off of an insignificant memory in probably record time like it’s just another Tuesday, funnily enough.

When the plan goes up in smoke, seeing Senku win Nikki over with his genuine honesty ends up being the heartwarming nourishment this episode needed to be a perfect well-balanced meal. And by the sounds of it, he also managed to capture her heart too and perhaps that’ll lead to something romantic. Although I’m sure Kohaku and Senku shippers will probably just deny it. And with Senku being the most uninterested I’ve ever seen in women who knows if he’ll ever do his duty and help repopulate the stone world. But he seems to be building himself a nice harem, even if he doesn’t want one, which I’m sure will make for a barrel of laughs at least (although, hopefully it goes beyond that one day. A guy can dream). Either way, a new member, in that of Nikki, has joined the Kingdom of Science as Dr. Stone: Stone Wars continues to progress nicely and delivers yet another exciting entry in the newest season.
