English Dub Review: Demon Lord, Retry! ” Demon Lord’s Descent”

Yet another isekai.

Overview:

A programmer finds himself pulled into a fantasy world in the body of a character that he created.

Our Take:

Isekai, the good old male power fantasy. While there are some isekai that take their own spin on things, such as Slime and Overlord, most series tend to follow a pretty set standard of tropes. It doesn’t seem as if this deviates from it much.

To be fair, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with it so far– it’s a pretty standard isekai. The protagonist himself is even aware of how cliched this isekai trope is, even going as far as chiding himself for not having read enough light novels to know the tropes of it. At the same time, he does have a legitimate skillset to warrant his power; he may not be skilled in fighting, but he is a game programmer, and the fantasy world does seem to function like a video game. He also is responsible for designing the character whose body he inhabits, so even if he has no knowledge of the world at large, he does know the character itself pretty well. A lot of isekai protagonists tend to not have much of a skill-set beyond being really good at games, but this protagonist actually has some credentials to back up

Thing is, it’s true– there is a lot of isekai. In fact, there’s probably too much isekai, and the genre feels incredibly over-saturated with average guys getting pulled into fantasy worlds wielding immeasurable power. While no red flags are popping up for me just yet, it reads like a perfectly average isekai to me, there’s nothing to make it particularly stand out. The animation is average, and the story is alright, but there’s nothing that wows me, or in the case of most isekai, has such a wild premise that I can’t help but be somewhat curious. I will, however, take that the protagonist seems to be a relatively nice person with a strong sense of justice, and doesn’t instantly hit on Aku. At this point, this is what I’m looking for in isekai– not having a protagonist who’s a creep towards women.

However, despite me being critical, there is nothing that stands out as being wrong with it so far, and it is pretty fun. It seems decidedly average, but a fun kind of average. I’m willing to give it a try.
