English Dub Review: Combatants Will Be Dispatched! “The Right Way to Clear a Tower!”

Overview:

Six isn’t the chosen, the prince is. Two demon lords take over a nearby tower and the army is having a hard time with it. Even the chosen prince was forced to retreat! Will Six’s smart albeit cowardly tactics work?

Our Take:

I never thought I would hear some referred to as “Count Thongula” but here we are. That is the nickname Alice gives Grimm while they’re climbing the aforementioned tower. What led to them climbing the tower? Well, Six’s brilliant planning of course!

I honestly can’t tell whether Six is a genius or an idiot. Maybe he is a sort of idiot savant, like when it comes to acts involving tactics the guy is pretty gifted. I once again have to mention how great Brendan Blaber is doing with the role as well. As I have stated this is his first major role and I suspect after this there will be many more.

The characters are fun and charming but more importantly, the dialogue is witty and hilarious. If not a bit immature at times but I think that is to be expected with a show like this. Six is purposely trying to set up his own fanservice events to which Alice has been receiving many complaints. I have really enjoyed how it plays with tropes in anime.

One of which is the “chosen one” trope. When the episode started and they mentioned that the chosen one would have a mark on their hand and Six had just got one I was rolling my eyes. Plus I was thinking “That kind of just looks like a bruise” so when it turned out it was just a bug bite from a deadly insect my respect for this show grew. Being able to keep things fresh and different will make this show stand out. Besides Six did what the “chosen one” couldn’t anyway so who needs it?

Writing a review for this show is tricky because the best part of it is the dialogue and visual gags. I feel like over-explaining them defeats the purpose of a show like this. Having said that the best thing I can is to give this show a go. It’s funny and subverts your expectations. There are still some tropes it leans into, of course, it still needs to give that comfortable feeling after all.
