English Dub Review: Black Clover “The Blue Rose’s Confession”
Overview (Spoilers Below)
In an effort to save Asta from being executed, the Black Bull Squad leader Yami decides to research the Weg curse that caused Asta and Secre to grow black horns. In the capital, Captain Charlotte Roselei of the Female Magical Knights Branch known as “Blue Rose” is embarrassed at the memories she has of the elf that possessed her talking with Yami as they only add more to her repressed romantic feelings towards him. Then when Yami suddenly appears in her hospital room. Clearly the biggest fucking plot-hole that ties with Asta’s Court crisis is that If Charlotte has memories from being controlled during the Elf-Arc, then wouldn’t that imply that the others who survived would also have memories of being previously possessed too? Asta could’ve had a large group of people who can explain the situation on Asta’s behalf in their testimonies right? Then why the fuck didn’t any of them say anything during the court proceedings? This hurts my head…
Of course, since this show likes to ignore logic and just focus on unrequited romantic hi-jinx, Yami tries to ask Charlotte about her own curse, but she is so overwhelmed she has a breakdown and runs mad throughout the city. Hours later she calms down and recalls Yami helping her break her curse then decides to gather her Blue Rose Knights, admits that she’s in love with a man (Yami) and is stepping down as Captain for feeling like it’s a betrayal to her core principles of self-reliance. Never-mind the fact that she almost killed them all while she was elf-possessed. That said, she is shocked when her fellow knights declare they will support her which in a way kinda humanizes her in the eyes of her squad as she’s only human.
Later under Asta’s advisement, Yami decides to have Dinner with Charolette, however, at dinner, Yami is too oblivious to realize it is supposed to be a date and continues asking about her curse. And despite being disappointed at not conveying her feelings to the muscle-head. Charlotte explains her family was cursed by a mage so that when she turned 18 her soul and magic both changed form, a curse that likely came from the world of devils. The episode ends when she drops a few other big twists that are quite surprising and relevant to the Black Bulls and a possible clue/lead on who would know more about curses better than anyone and specifically it’s someone within Yami’s Squad.
Our Take
Aside from the Canyon-sized plothole of the Court stuff I mentioned that sadly keeps me from giving this a higher rating, I went into this episode feel like this was mostly going to be filler, but I surprisingly enjoyed it a lot. Charlotte is a good character, and her overreactions while played for laughs were at least entertaining. And now we’re slowly getting back on track with the plot, but since this is Black Clover, I feel like we’re all used to this slower than usual pacing at this point.
It also feels like Black Clover’s Manga Creator Yūki Tabata is paralleling specific “will they?/won’t they?” relationship dynamics as if to say Yami and Charlotte’s relationship mirror’s Noelle and Asta’s. With both women love putting on a proverbial mask of pride, superiority, and elitism which 80% of the time keeps them from being honest with themselves romantically, while both male characters are starting to come across as oblivious morons when it comes to the opposite sex. But, truth be told, Yami’s only for the specifics to save Asta from the Magic Kingdom’s courtroom bullshit. For someone to be affected by her curse, It had to be the last person anyone would even think about within the Black Bulls, I’m both compelled and curious to see what will happen next!
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
