English Dub Review: Black Clover “Dawn”

(Possible Spoilers Below)

As the Black Devil slowly dies he’s confronted by the demonic entity within Asta’s Grimoire who gloats at his victory. At the same time this is going on the formless magic mass that this Black devil emitted, begins to consume the Shadow Palace but everyone is thankfully saved by Rades and Valtos who help them escape through portals, only to find the remaining elves still attacking the city. Patry reveals they can be stopped using Vangeance’s World Tree Magic.

As part of the deal he made with Patry, Asta nullifies his reincarnation, waking Vangeance up who is grateful that Patry is no longer suffering. And Vengence then proceeds to combine his World Tree Magic with Licht’s powers, tieing up loose ends with the Elves and managing to stop them once and for all while giving them their well-deserved peace with the exception of Vetto, Rhya, and Fana who now possess artificial bodies and decide instead to embrace their new lives to the fullest.

Yuno then realizes the elf he was possessed by is an interesting twist even I didn’t expect, while the understandably furious Rades captures Patry’s soul and reanimates it back into Licht’s cloned body, demanding he stay and atone for his past sins and the role he played for looking the other way when the Black Devil ruined the Elve’s lives, to which Patry agrees. William asks Yami to take him to the Wizard King’s body. And it’s here that Asta introduces everyone to Lumiere and Secre, explaining who they are. Lumiere is happy the ideal world he worked for is slowly becoming what he envisioned and as he slowly runs out of magic before dying, The episode ends on a meaningful note when the long-fabled Wizard King gives Secre one final order…

Our Take

The aftermath of this attempts to tie-up loose ends with the Elves who were arguably the bigger victims compared to the humans with their blind rage and misplaced vengeance due to the Black Devil’s machinations were the cause of so much death, chaos, and racism. It was also quite an emotional moment for them to leave their hatred behind and depart in peace. And it made me laugh the most that Patry would blindly think he was going to get into the afterlife Scot-free for the atrocious crimes he helped commit with the Black Devil only to get revived by Rades.

Overall, much like the Anime greats such as the Dragon Ball and Jojo franchises. This show is one of the few examples of steady, gradual consistent changes over many episodes. Compared to the start of the show the quality has drastically gone up. And as far as I can tell, Each character had their badass moment to shine in some way and was properly fleshed out now as all the years of world/character building paid off.

Now as that we’ve reached 120 episodes you’d think this would be the ending but given that this current storyline is catching up with the manga, and with no announced ending from the creator himself, we’re bound to see more Black Clover in the future.
