English Dub Review: Astra Lost in Space “Secret”
A Tsunami of plot-twists comes our way within this episode.
Ulgar after placing a gun to Luca’s head, explains to everyone within the crew that while he has no desire to take anyone hostage and isn’t the “traitor” who got them stranded, his primary objective is to find out if his older brother was murdered Luca’s politician father “Marco Esposito” for investigating his corruption. It’s also clear like most of the shitty parents in this show, that Ulgar is no exception as his brother was also favored and loved more than him, despite the irony that his brother actually gave a shit about him when his own parents didn’t. So In retaliation to his brother’s murder, Ulgar seeks to kill Luca, who is Marco’s eldest son and apparent heir. However, Luca explains to Ulgar that he is not Marco’s heir due to a very specific birth defect… In addition, Luca had been secretly adopted into the Esposito family before his condition was discovered, and was all but disowned when his younger brother was born.
Upon Luca revealing his equally tragic backstory, Ulgar realizes that Luca is an outcast from his family just like him and stands down. Of course, this reprieve doesn’t last when Suddenly, the island is hit by a tsunami. Most of the group manages to make it on to the Astra safely, but what happens next is an interesting and heartfelt turn-around between Ulgar and Luca that says so much with so little, but they both end up being rescued by Kanata. After the crew full-on leaves the Island planet of “Arispade”,
In the aftermath, Ulgar apologizes to Luca and vows to return home alive to investigate his brother’s death. In response to this, Zack then brings up the possibility that Ulgar’s brother may have uncovered a much deeper conspiracy-wise than some political scandal, which may be why they’ve all been targeted.
With a more hardened resolve than before, Ulgar decides he will become a journalist like his brother and Kanata allows Ulgar to keep possession of the gun since he is the only person who knows how to use it. Later on, Aries gets into a conversation with the ship’s cook Charce, and she notices an inconsistency about a story he shares with Aries, but the episode ends when this specific convo causes the group to confront Charce as they believe he has something to hide…
Our Take
As a keen observation, the Intro has slightly changed reflecting how certain characters have changed as exemplified with Yunhua’s positive disposition and haircut. The flashbacks do paint a tragic picture in Ulgar’s life and also explain smaller details such as where his hat came from, but the specific details of this hat, make his backstory all the more tragic. The Big reveal with Luca’s secret, in this day in age is both a plausible & relatable scenario for people of that condition to be disowned by asshole parents like Luca’s, but it was also refreshing that Ulgar could reach some mutual understanding to how shitty their parents were to them in different ways.
As far as I can tell, we know nothing about Charce as a character other than he’s a pretty boy with extensive knowledge about cooking tasty otherworldly dishes with limited resources, So It should be interesting to see what happens next.
