English Dub Review: Anime-Gataris “Kaikai Love Climax”

The anime club takes a real-life ‘anime pilgrimage’.

Overview (Spoilers Below):

For the second time in a row, this is another episode that takes place outside the school setting.  Minoa and the anime club are taking a trip to visit some real-life locations from one of their favorite anime (a homage to Girl Und Panzer).

Along the way, Kaikai begins to suspect that Miko has a crush on him. (It turns out that he’s mistaken.) Minoa also deals with her perceived inadequacies stemming from her status as the anime newbie of the club. She gets lost on the way to the bath, but her friends eventually rescue her, affirming her place in the club and in their hearts. (And hey, she gets to experience the ‘god rays’ for the first time, so losing her way in the forest wasn’t a total bummer!)

Our Take:

With a title including the phrase ‘love climax’, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the sixth episode of Anime-Gataris. It turned out to be pretty similar to past episodes, with lots of fun anime-referencing humor and trope-y gags.

Breaking some new ground though, it explored Kaikai’s feelings about romance and Minoa’s feelings about her place in the club. These two plotlines, along with the new scenery that comes from being away from the school, made for an entertaining episode that shed light on different aspects of the core characters. I hope going forward that Anime-Gataris can keep building up these characters that started out as common cliches but have grown to show off their own distinctive personalities and quirks.
