English Dub Review: Anime-Gataris “Anime Club Finally Falls”

In its 10th episode, Anime-Gataris serves up a storm.

Overview (Spoilers Below):

While finally confronting the Principal over his seeming hatred of the anime club, the group discovers that he is actually a huge anime fan himself! What’s more, he even directed an anime series himself back in his youth. And if that wasn’t enough, it’s the anime that Minoa has been searching for since the premiere!

After showing him that his work inspired people (despite being canceled after the first episode aired), the anime club is gifted with the return of their club room. But while the threat of the Principal is gone, strange things are still happening. To Minoa’s amazement, all her fellow club members seem to be able to hear Mr. Kitty talk, the Principal might have supernatural weather powers, and ‘Aurora’ is definitely not who he is pretending to be!

Our Take:

Anime Club Finally Falls may sound like a depressing title, but this episode actually turned into something pretty positive for the club. Thanks to guidance from her Otaku Dad, Minoa realizes that even if they lose the clubroom, their friendships formed by anime will always survive. This was certainly one of the craziest episodes I’ve been lucky enough to watch this season. From the Principal’s snarky commentary on the club’s minisode to the Arisu-obsessed fanboy, Anime-Gataris swung for the fences and nailed a lot of aspects. The overarching plot is finally in full gear and the jokes haven’t let up.

The only things that gave me pause this episode were the small moments of unnecessarily-creepy sexual moments, like the homeroom teacher’s announcement that his underage students will have to ‘get rough’ with him in order to get to the Principal’s office, or Mr. Kitty getting a face full of boobs during a hug.

Anime-Gataris has always been a fun series to watch, but with this episode, the stakes have been raised. Is Aurora an evil time-traveler? And what part does Mr. Kitty have in all this? I’m excited to see how everything will play out!
