English Dub Review: Angels of Death “Stop crying and smile.”

Well, that’s it for Angels of Death. This episode was a lot more melancholy honestly, but that’s fitting considering where they’re trying to go with this.

Overview:

The two of them finally get out of the building and are met with the police.

Our Take:

Zack and Rachel manage to make it out before the building collapses, but Rachel is unconscious from blood loss, and Zack is apprehended by the police. As Rachel recovers from her wounds, she is pushed by her therapists to ease into normal society. This of course, falls apart because Rachel has never wanted to be normal, and her only point of interest is reuniting with Zack.

The ending after the credits is extremely vague, with Rachel and Zack both vanishing. The knife is left behind in the hospital, along with broken glass and a large splatter of blood. This scene could be taken in two ways: a dream, or reality. If it’s a dream, then Rachel was processing the news of Zack being up for execution badly and imagined him visiting her one last time. He does have his scythe, and he didn’t leave the facility with a scythe in hand. You don’t find something that specific lying around, especially since work scythes are much smaller. After that, she would have committed suicide by cutting her throat on the glass or jumping out the window.

The other, which I think is far more pleasant, is that it actually happened. Zack has always been a very active person, and he was determined to get Rachel to safety- and to see her again. Unfortunately, that’s not possible, since he was apprehended by the police and confessed to the four murders he did as a child. However, Zack, upon visiting her, claims that he left the police station. The police wouldn’t have let him just walk out, and the blood could have been Zack bleeding out some more. Then the two of them would have escaped for good.

Personally, I like the happy interpretation better. This is a series that heavily relies on the details of Rachel and Zack’s codependence, and the fact that they can escape and do something together is a nice feeling.

I have mixed feelings about this anime overall. I don’t think it was particularly terrible, but I think that several aspects of it would have worked much better as a game than an anime. But more of that next week in the official review.
