DVD Review: Camp Camp Seasons 1 & 2

Campe DVD-em!

This announcement seems pretty insignificant now, given the recent news of casting for an upcoming sister show, but fans of Camp Camp have been waiting on a home release for some time, so it’s worth mentioning how that release actually is.

Going by the same model of their previous X-Ray and Vav release by bundling the first two seasons together instead of separately, this allows fans to see a bigger picture of the show’s relatively short history by showing the writing team, animation crew, and voice cast learning to grow into their roles as the show was coming out. Each disc, one covering each season, comes with two sets of commentary by the writers and the voice cast/crew. There’s some overlap between them, as Miles Luna (voice of David) and Jordan Cwierz contribute on both fronts, but with that comes a welcome look into the method behind the madness in the writing and directing style, particularly in how most episodes have an “anti-moral” forced in by adult characters and real morals that the kids come to naturally. While there’s plenty I don’t agree with or feel was executed well, it is nice to get some sense of what was intended and what sort of structure the team was working with, especially since this form of episodic storytelling is not the norm with Rooster Teeth’s other works.

Camp Camp holds a special place in my heart, as its first season was one of the first things I covered on this site, so while it’s not what I would consider I high point in RT’s filmography, it was, in a way, useful in helping me develop my own writing. So, if you enjoy the show, give this a look. $20 for five hours of content isn’t a bad deal, and it’s a good way to build up the hype before the third season’s premiere this Friday.
