DVD REVIEW: BOB’S BURGERS SEASON 1

Exec producer Loren Bouchard has had a heck of a career in producing animated television. Some might know him as co-creator of Home Movies but I will always adore his work on Dr. Katz as I always thought it was SO underrated on a network(Comedy Central) that only had two other kinds of programming on it  South Park and a bunch of stand up comedians . A little more than a decade later Loren would re-team with Jon Benjamin and introduce us to the Belchers…this is their story this is Bob’s Burgers Season 1 on DVD.

Never mind the other stuff this DVD comes with as you know its all awesome, right? Bob’s Burgers has quietly put together a cult following the likes of  which is easier said then done(which if you don’t believe me you can ask Allen or Napoleon).  First of all, tip of the cap to whomever pitched Bob’s Burgers as I bet you couldn’t even name the last time there was a decent workplace comedy(animated or otherwise) on FOX even with all of the projects that have come through the network over the last 25 years while rival NBC has had a whole bunch.

I think what I like about this show the most is how DIFFERENT it is from the rest of the pack. Typically with the Seth shows you get a blubberin’ dolt as the father, a super hot-wife,with kids who constantly challenge their parents authority. There’s nothing wrong with that, hell that’s why we love Seth and everything he does, but what creator Loren Bouchard gives us is a wholesome down to earth animated series. Bob is relatively mild-mannered when compared to the likes of Stan Smith, Peter Griffin, and Homer Simpsons. Linda is more or less the crazy one of the family, but she doesn’t really exude any physical features like Lois or Marge, the latter of which has been on the cover of Playboy. In the other shows, all the kids are kind of fighting with each other ala Lisa and Bart and have made a pretty fine career of doing so, whereas Bob’s kids are usually together in a group getting into silly but not too over the top mischief with Louise causing the most disarray of all but at the end of the day they watch each other’s back a little more so than the others.

Like all DVDs, Bob’s Burgers comes with enough audio commentaries to keep you happy as you peruse through all 13 episodes. The crown jewel of the DVD is the alternate take on the ‘Human Flesh’ episode as it was really great getting Loren’s pitch process for Bob’s and it was really awesome getting to see the evolution of the characters from inception to birth(aka minus penis noses). That particular special feature ALONE I think was definitely worth the price of admission, and as such I recommend you pick it up because we are only about halfway through season 2 and might not see another DVD for a while.
