Comics Review: Supermansion #2

I did Nazi that coming.

The Crackle original series finishes its brief two-issue run with a European vacation story and it’s…bad. As mentioned in the review of the previous issue, a big hook for the show is its voice cast, particularly big names like Bryan Cranston and Keegan Michael Key, and beyond that, the characters aren’t super compelling or interesting enough to follow into a different medium. That’s even more so the case for the show’s usual attempts at provocative humor, which probably would’ve been fresh a decade ago, but now just seem to attempt getting a rise instead of anything character or plot driven. These are usually more tolerable in stop-motion animation and the ongoing storylines that at least give viewers a reason to get invested, but without those, it suffers.

The plot in question involves Sgt Agony sending the team off to Germany for a vacation to ease Titanium Rex’s stress, and American Ranger’s PTSD triggers being around all of the Germans. Luckily for him, the resident European superhero team does turn out to be Nazis, and invade their titular place of residence. There are also attempts to place it at some point in mid-Season 1, with Brad and Lex among the hero roster, but they contribute nothing and don’t even talk or interact with anyone in any meaningful way, so who is that for? Brad fans?

The art doesn’t help, portraying the cast in near unrecognizable caricatures of their designs, and boiling them down to the bare minimum of their distinguishable character traits. But, if you’re big enough of a fan of the show, you’ll probably want to pick this up or wait for the collected version of both issues coming out in August. However, this just isn’t for me. I’m not saying a comic version of this show wouldn’t be doable, but this wasn’t the way to do it.
