Comics Review: Kanan – The Last Padawan #1

Star Wars used to be under the Dark Horse banner, where a lot of the stories were set in the Extended Universe. Most of which was jettisoned when Disney took over LucasArts. So, it was only a matter of time until the Mouse of House brought Star Wars to the “House of Ideas” of Marvel, great things were bound to happen, because every thing published will now have something to do with what you see on the screen when you watch Star Wars.

That said, Kanan – The Last Padawan is a companion book to Star Wars Rebels, because it attempts to tell the backstory of Kanan Jarrus. What you don’t know, is that he once went by a different name, Caleb Dune. He was an apprentice under Depa Billaba, and together, liberated Planet Kaller from the Droid Army of the Separatists. Unfortunately, as the celebration continued into the night, Darth Sidious has executed that familiar order to kill all remaining Jedi in the galaxy, Order 66.

This was a great issue #1, because it goes back to the events of Episode III, and tells it from a point of view never even conceived before. Seeing Kanan in a completely different environment from the crew of the Ghost was  really different. Seeing Marvel take chances with the stories being told, and where they fall in the Star Wars universe is great to see. On a completely unrelated note, this does absolutely nothing to quell my fear for the quality of Episode VII, but that’s a story for a completely different time. Kanan – The Last Padawan #1 is a great into to what could be a great story.
