Comics Review: Bravest Warriors #10

There is only one thing I can say before reading this month’s Bravest Warriors: please be better than last month. Was it? Click it and find out!

Spoilers Ahead!

If there is one thing I like about Bravest Warriors, it’s the rampant references to pop culture it makes. This issue has only one, but it’s a kick-ass one. The first half of the story is very close to being a direct correlation to Die Hard. We have: Nakatomi Tower, a party, an underdressed main character, and robbers. We even get a scene where Chris is walking through a room filled with broken glass. After Bravest Warriors does Die Hard, Chris drops dead, and has a chess game with Death. What does he do? He does what any smart person would do in that situation: he punches Death square in the face! While they’re having a philosophical debate about good and evil, the rest of the crew is waiting for him to get out of the holo-john. By the power of Catbug, he finds out that his bravery is what keeps him from becoming anything else.

“Bored to Tears!”

Ok, this is a simple story. Have you ever played Monopoly with your friends? Take out Monopoly, put in a futuristic game that hurts you and the people that play it, that’s Space Marine in a nutshell. Chris does the smart thing, and leaves after turn one. Everyone else, they stay in for the long run, and play for a very long time, almost ruining themselves, and their friendships. Who wins? Catbug, of course!

This was a lot better than last month’s issue. Instead of a pointless issue of fighting for the sake of making out, we get a pretty kick-ass spoof of Die Hard, Death getting his ass kicked, and almost nothing of the other characters. This was a better one-of, because it actually focused on a character, and had a decent, albeit familiar story. Definitely worth the read, expecially if you’re looking for a jump-in point. We get back to the b-plot being a complement to the main story, not carrying the issue to a passable level.
