Overview:

First in the issue is “Marceline the Derby Queen” by Chelsea Van Weerdhuizen and Reimena Yee. Marceline has writer’s block and tries to go to the Ice Kingdom for inspiration. Unfortunately, all she finds are penguins. A derby race is going on, and she decides to try joining in. The Ice King sees the race and upsets that he wasn’t invited, starts crashing the party. Marceline goes to investigate and finds that the Ice King lost his invitation in a sandwich. They all reconcile and start the race anew.

Second up is “Epic Yard Sale” by James Asmus and Christina Chua, where Finn and Jake’s adventure memento closet is full, so they have a yard sale. As customers are browsing, an artifact containing rot bugs are accidentally unleashed. They try to stop it, but they accidentally sold their antidote to the Ice King. In exchange, the Ice King demands all their stuff, which they easily agree to. The bugs are sealed, and the Ice King gets everything in the yard sale– including the bugs.

In “Cavities” by Jason Cooper and Jenna Ayoub, Bubblegum’s party is interrupted by her getting the aforementioned cavity. She finds it strange, as she doesn’t usually get cavities. The ground goes out from beneath them, which transports everyone far below the surface to where an army of rock monsters called the Underground lives. They want to challenge the champions of Ooo to a battle, but Finn and Jake are outnumbered. Everyone else trains and they defeat the horde. Just when things seem to return to normal, Bubblegum has another stomachache.

Lastly, in “Hamilton” by Emei Burell, Bubblegum’s past is told in musical form. When Finn is wowed by it, she insists that it’s just a performance.

Our Take:

A mish-mash of stories this time around, with some better than others. Hamilton, while being a parody of the Broadway show, also puts together key parts of Bubblegum’s life into a cohesive timeframe. While some are exaggerated, the general gist of how Bubblegum came to be and the happenings of her kingdom are fairly accurate. It’s a cute parody that is also quite informative.

The rest of the stories are cute, but nothing special- though it’s always nice to see Marceline having fun.
