Comics Review: Adventure Time Comics #17

Traveling all around Ooo this time around!

Overview:

First off is ‘Happy Birthday in Ooo’ by Michael Moreci and Christopher Mitten. Jake throws Finn a birthday party by bringing him all around Ooo. Finn has a lot of fun, but at the end of the day, he doesn’t actually remember whether it’s his birthday or not.

Second is ‘Marceline’s Lumpy Space Party’, by Pat Shand and Spencer Amundson. LSP asks Marceline to sing at her party, and Marceline agrees. She’s a big hit, enough that some of the partygoers get so incredibly enamored with her music that they want her to stay- forever. One of them tries to infect Marceline with the lumps, but she easily scares him off. They admit they really just wanted Marceline to stay, and she agrees to play an encore.

Next up is ‘Escape Room’ by Derek Laufman. Finn, Jake, and Bubblegum all enter a game maze where they have to solve the multiple riddles, or they will never get out alive. If they manage to complete it, they get free lollipops. They go through the puzzles comedically, mostly through luck, before Jake decides to just crash through the walls. They get their lollipops, but not in the flavors they want, so they vow to try again.

In ‘Finn’s Sandwich’ by Jeffrey Brown, Finn creates the perfect sandwich. Word gets out, and LSP steals it, leading to a series of events that ruin it completely. Jake tries to cheer up by dancing with Finn in the mud. Finn is still hungry, but he continues doing so regardless.

Our Take:

The collection this time was very lighthearted and enjoyable. They all felt like small Adventure Time episodes; a little serious but all made of fun. Even where some happenings would traditionally have had high stakes, the characters just roll with it, and find interesting new ways to avoid danger.

A personal favorite was Marceline’s Lumpy Space Party, which highlighted more of LSP and Marceline’s friendship. LSP is very self-centered and prickly, but she and Marceline have had a growing friendship that’s only compounded by the comics. Marceline is enough of a hit that the rest of Lumpy Space wants her to stay too, so her talents are being recognized everywhere.

Altogether, a fun read, if you want more short Adventure Time snippets!
