Comic Review: Bob’s Burger Ongoing #16

This issue is a little different. It’s one huge story told in three different parts by each of the Belcher kids.

Spoilers Below

The story is a burger version of “Little Shop of Horrors.” In the first part, Gene does his rhymey rhymes to tell us how the kids bought some strange spice when they were supposed to buy pepper for Bob. Teddy, fixing a random live wire in the kitchen, asks Bob to make him a burger with the spice. Bob makes the burger but Teddy never eats it. Meanwhile, Felix comes into the store to collect the rent for his brother. Anyway, after the restaurant closes, the kids are supposed to clean up and put the leftover burger in the fridge. However, Gene pricks his finger and the burger sucks some of his blood. The kids rush back to their parents without doing anything with the burger.

Louise picks up the story from here. She tells her side in an unsolved mysteries way. The burger has grown tremendously overnight. The kids try to explain it to Bob and Linda but they don’t listen. Everyone is too busy being awed by the huge burger. They put the burger on the counter for passers-by to see and Linda names it Linda II. Once again, the kids are alone with the burger after the restaurant closes. The burger demands to be fed. It just so happens that Felix returns to get the rent money from Bob. Yeah, the burger eats him. Again, the kids try to explain it but no one will listen. Besides, the restaurant business is booming now. And, once again, the burger demands to be fed after the restaurant closes.

Now it’s Tina’s turn. Of course her story is an erotic friend fiction. The enormous burger has created such a stir that a local TV reporter is covering the story. And Mr. Fischoeder wants to expand the restaurant into a chain. Things are definitely looking up. Right? The kids aren’t comfortable with having a chain of restaurants across the country with man-eating burgers proudly displayed. They have a kids’ meeting in the back alley, which is promptly interrupted by their parents. Bob and Linda still don’t believe the kids until the adults return inside. This time the burger tries to eat them! Together, the family decides to use the live wire that Teddy never fixed to kill the burger. Tina charms the burger while Bob zaps it. Once the burger is dead, they take it out to the dumpster. Felix, still alive, slides out of the burger’s dead mouth. The world is saved.

“Little Shop of Horrors” is one of my favorite musicals. Yes, there is a non-musical movie version but it’s not as fun. This version is just as fun as the musical I love. Having the story told by each of the kids was a flash of genius. Each of the Belcher kids gave the story their own flare while keeping it kinda dark. I would love to see them tackle some other classics. This could be a great way to get people to understand stories that may be a little difficult to read alone.
