Bubble IE Review: Ends Meet S1Ep8

Crazy eights.

Overview:

In this episode, Sean Og gets in trouble for talking in class, setting a bin on fire, insulting his teacher, and generally, proceeding apace along the road to hell, if his headmistress is to be believed.
She cautions him against ending up like his father, and attempts to educate Sean Og as to the error of his ways, envisioning herself as a force for good, gently ushering him toward the path of righteousness, while Beezer, in her view, is only likely to lead Sean Og astray, with his Die Hard DVDs and puerile humour.
Sean Og, being an impressionable child, feels a little lost and sad in the face of this, and wonders if he is, after all, a bad person bound for hell or prison. Fortunately, Beezer turns up and reassures Sean Og that there is no right or wrong, and no consequential hell, and so the two rebels wander off into the sunset, free of responsibility or worry.

Our Take:

The episode has some jokes, situational humour, and satirisation. On top of that, it feels like it’s trying to teach us an important lesson, as with previous episodes. What exactly the lesson is that we are meant to be learning here, however, is unclear. It feels like there must be some compromising ideal somewhere between the headmistress’ puritanical views and Beezer’s complete abdication of moral responsibility, but an acknowledgment of this does not seem to have made it to the final edits. Perhaps it will appear as a DVD extra. Failing that, we shall have to look forward to the show eventually filling a longer time-slot, so it will have the opportunity to more fully explore all of the big questions and issues it seems to so desperately want to tackle.
