BONGO COMICS REVIEW: RALPH WIGGUM #1

In the first of Bongo Comics’ soon to be legendary Simpson Comics One-Shot Wonders, Ralph Wiggum takes center stage. In his first solo outing, Ralph has a day off of school, is left home alone, and becomes a role model to a new kid in town. Add in some short features by Sergio Aragones and watch the chaos ensue!

Spoilers Below

THE MAN OF THE HOUSE

Chief Wiggum leaves Ralph at home, calling the little guy “The man of the house”. Ralph sees this as an opportunity to be just like his dad by securing the perimeter, making breakfast, and mopping up the floors. Of course, with Ralph these chores take on an entirely different meeting, as he nearly burns the house to the ground with all his shenanigans.

RALPH WIGGUM’S DAY OFF

Ralph takes the day off from school, providing much need entertainment to everyone around town. This includes singing a tune at the local park, reading Kent Brockman’s news, and talking a guy off the ledge. And his punishment for skipping class? Getting a ride home with his dad in time for a home made lunch.

RALPH THE ROLE MODEL

Ralph doesn’t have any friends. And after a lengthy interview process, Ralph settles on helping a some kid with a lisp who is really just a leprechaun in disguise. The leprechaun is a screwy little bastard, as he keeps putting Ralph into situations to try and either get himself hurt or in trouble. That is until Ralph let’s the dogs out!

First thing’s first, THE MAN OF THE HOUSE was totally not indicative of whom Ralph Wiggum is, and I thought it was terrible. For one, Ralph is drawn to look like Pac-Man with a terrible tan. Next, he’s put into a story that makes him look retarded, which if you know Ralph, he isn’t one to try and cause trouble. Everyone else who scripted Ralph in the other stories got him just right, as Ralph’s day off is just a story about a naive kid who happens to do good in his neighborhood. Same with “Role Model”, where he isn’t trying to cause anyone trouble, rather he is tricked into helping a kid out. Also, the Ralph’s Room shorts were very good, and I still could NOT find Ralph in the Where’s Ralph puzzle….yep this might take me a while!

P.S. Also, check out Bongo Comics, as they are currently running a contest surrounding the release of Ralph Wiggum#1 which is on news stands everywhere.
