Review: Dragonball Super Ep.2: To the Promised resort! Vegeta’s Family Vacation?!
Beerus is looking for fresh meat.
Spoilers Below
The episode begins with Goku arriving on King Kai’s planet almost putting King Kai in a Car Wreck in the process which annoys him a bit as he has to repair a building while Goku excessively eats and explains to King Kai that he has come over to do some intensive gravity training which further annoy’s King Kai when he points out to Goku that his house-planet isn’t some Gym he can check in and out of as he pleases.
Goku then switches his training clothes to some sort of jogging outfit that has a sky blue & white color scheme and begins.
We then cut to Vegeta, Trunks, and Bulma who take a small vacation because Vegeta promised to Trunks if he lay a punch on him he’ll uphold his end of the bargain which he thankfully did. The Flashback is small but it’s a great call-back to that particular episode in the Buu Saga.
Their first order of business is going to the mall to get Trunks some new clothing. This is a comical scene in a number of ways as we see The Saiyan Prince interact with society and randomly zone-out with zero fucks to give.
We also get a montage of pictures on their holiday with Vegeta hilariously being very deadpan with the same expression. The montage mainly displayed the family riding on a kiddie-train, getting ice-cream and even Trunks getting what looks like a nightmare fuel inducing jack-in-a-box toy when you open it up. It doesn’t really advance the story, but it’s refreshing to see Vegeta and his family in a more casual & relaxing setting. It’s interesting to see Vegeta react differently to what most people define as “fun”.
The closest we get to see Vegeta experiencing some level of joy in this episode is when they start eating, and if you know anything about the Saiyan species at this point, they’re capable of excessively eating cartoonishly large quantities (Goku is even guilty of this as well.) As far as I can tell, this is one of the only times we see him feel any enjoyment from the trip. However, Vegeta gets heavily annoyed when a random giant Octopus they’re eating squirts ink on him. Which leads to Trunks & Bulma having to restrain him from unleashing Super Saiyan Hell.
Later, they relax looking over the ocean at the resort they’re staying in and after seeing a cruise-ship, this gives Bulma an Idea to hold an exclusive party on a luxury liner for her birthday.
The vacation reaches a boiling point for Vegeta when they go and see a concert. There’s a performance on stage with fire dancers and more but Vegeta is not amused getting stuck in the middle of a crowd pushing and shoving him all of the time. The announcer with the large afro on stage ends up demanding people to have a “dance-off” with him which further annoys Vegeta to the point that he powers up to break free from the crowd but thankfully doesn’t cause harm to anyone.
The rest of this episode shifts the focus on Beerus & Whis. Beerus wants Whis to find him a worthy challenger to fight. They go to an alien planet to find a bizarre creature dressed like a caveman with four arms & four eyes and looks quite looks impressive and intimidating at first but is instantly blown to hell by Beerus with just his index finger.
Beerus then destroys the planet with a gleeful sadistic smile which causes Old Kai to be piss-scared beyond measure as him and Kibito Kai sense that Beerus has awakened after 39 Years.
We cut back to Vegeta who flew back home to train in the Gravity chamber thinking about how about how he can ambitiously get stronger, Juxtaposed to Goku unintentionally causing, even more, property Damage to King Kai’s grass lawn by dragging some monumentally large weights across his tiny planet. 😛
The episode ends when we cut back to Beerus talking about the existence of a “Super Saiyan God” somewhere out in the universe because he’s had prophetic visions of it. Beerus believes battling this supposed figure will amuse him and they go back to his world to eat.
Overview
Despite this being another “filler episode”, it was interesting to see Vegeta interact with Earth society like a grumpy dad who didn’t want to leave the house. But at least Vegeta was principled enough to keep to his word with his son. The flashbacks, while they did serve a purpose, also reminded me how long ago the Buu saga was.
One thing that left me puzzled is the fact that Goku still trains at King-Kai’s place despite being at a much higher level than the gravity-altering environment of what Kai’s planet could give possibly him, and sometimes it feels like Goku likes to simple-mindedly dick with him whenever he causes property damage while training yet he does bring up the fact that they’re old friends, and his training is a way to spend time with him despite the time he accidently blew him up years ago while trying to stop Cell during the “Cell Saga”.
I’m really enjoying the build-up of Beerus & Whis. It’s doing a good job of establishing Beerus as a legit threat while setting up the events towards the “Battle of the Gods” arc. Can’t wait for next week!

There's got to be some kind of twist that's going to happen with this. I don't know if they're setting up an April Fool's joke now or what's going on, but it seems too strange that they'd suddenly reverse on doing a fourth and fifth season after the show was already renewed and they were even just talking about working on those seasons like a couple months ago or something. Or maybe the two episodes yet to release will secretly somehow each be like a "season" in themselves?
