Review: Wander Over Yonder “The Black Cube / The Eye on the Skullship”

Spoilers Below

The Black Cube

The little black cube of darkness is having a bad day, and it keeps getting worse. His girlfriend dumps him, he loses his job at the fast food restaurant, and he almost gets framed for nearly killing a kid. Fortunately, Wander doesn’t give up on him, and in fact, because of Sylvia’s kind works, the town seems to have come around and accepted the little black cube of darkness into their neighborhood.

Our Take

Definitively, the best episode of Wander Over Yonder that I’ve ever seen. The entire thing is in black and white, and the songs were so damn well written. Despite the fact that this cube is pure evil and steals souls. I couldn’t help rooting for the poor bastard as he had to deal with all sorts of craziness in his life. Not everyone has a friend like Wander around, but I’m glad this guy does.

The Eye on the Skullship

Meet Andy. He’s a watchdog for the ship that has his own TV show made FOR watchdogs BY watchdogs. And you really gotta hand it to Andy because he tries his best to make his show something to watch getting interviews with tailors of the ship, the chefs, and even an attempt at Lord Hator. Problem is, aside from watchdogs not named Peepers, Hater can’t seem to understand why anyone would watch this show.

Our Take

Hey, I’ve been there. A journalist trying to get a story, but not having the support of your fellow inmates. But like Andy, you gotta do what you gotta do.

And while the previous episode would have been a hard follow, the producers of Wander Over Yonder had a great idea of just kind of having fun this weekend. With “The Eye on the Skullship”, we got to see a lot that we haven’t seen before i.e. an outsider’s perspective on what it’s like working with one of the most ruthless villains in the galaxy. The result is a different kind of hilarity of whence we are used to, and with a break coming up for the show, it couldn’t have come at a better time.
