Review: Star Wars Rebels – “Always Two There Are”

Rex and Zeb are playing a rousing game of dejarik, which Rex wins. Nearby, Kanan tries to get Ezra to lift Chopper with the Force. However, Chopper has locked himself to the floor, making Ezra’s task impossible. Rex and Kanan start arguing about whether Ezra needs discipline or focus when Hera walks in with a mission. There is an abandoned medical station nearby. She is sending Sabine, Chopper, and Zeb to scavenge the station for supplies. Trying to avoid the argument between Rex and Kanan, Ezra sneaks onto the Phantom and joins the mission.

When the groups arrives at the station, there is no power. Instead of powering up a single station, Chopper powers up the entire base. This, of course, alerts the Empire to a presence. The Fifth Brother, the new Inquisitor that has taken over for Agent Kallus, senses a Jedi on the station and heads off to take care of the nuisance.

All of the medical supply files found by Chopper are corrupt. While he tries to fix them, the rest of the team searches the rest of the station for the much needed supplies. All alone, Chopper hears some strange noises down the hall. He goes to investigate and finds two small probe droids. The droids overtake Chopper, who is able to send out one distress signal to Ezra before he is deactivated. Hearing Chopper’s plea for help, Ezra jumps into the air duct with Sabine to rush to the droid’s aid. Unfortunately, Zeb is too big and ends up getting stuck in the ceiling.

Ezra and Sabine, however, never reach Chopper. No, they are ambushed by a new Inquisitor instead. A female Inquisitor known as The Seventh Sister. She manages to capture Ezra but Sabine escapes. Sabine rushes back to Zeb, only to find him still stuck in the ceiling. She pulls him out and tells him about the new Inquisitor. The two attempt to save Ezra but are ambushed by The Fifth Brother. Even though he knocks out both Zeb and Sabine, he can only carry Sabine back to The Seventh Sister.

When Zeb wakes up, he only finds Sabine’s helmet. As he heads back to the Phantom, he comes across the deactivated Chopper. He wakes up the astromech droid, finds some of the medical supplies, and continues his journey back to the Phantom. However, his conscience won’t let him leave without the kids. So he plots a way to save his friends by himself. Against two Inquisitors. Why not.

Meanwhile, The Seventh Sister is trying to get Ezra to tell her where the rest of the rebels are. Specifically, Ahsoka. But Ezra refuses to talk. Suddenly, he gets a call on his com-link asking if they need help. Sabine starts to refuse but The Fifth Brother threatens her with his lightsaber so Ezra agrees to get help. They are told to go to one of the bays and keep their chins up. It turns out that Zeb is inside the Phantom on the ceiling of the bay. When one of the probe droids notices him, he flies down and begins shooting at the Inquisitors. Ezra and Sabine jump into the ship and they barely manage to escape.

Back with the rebels, Ezra tells Kanan, Rex, and Hera about the two Inquisitors they encountered. It seems that Kanan didn’t know there was more than one. If only they had some idea of who they were up against.

While I can appreciate that they needed a way to introduce a new secret Inquisitor, this episode was pretty boring. Even the fights with the two bad guys felt lame. When the Phantom was escaping, the two Inquisitors started working together, which would have re-captured their prisoners, but then The Fifth Brother broke off his Force attack in order to block some blasts from the ship. The Seventh Sister was unable to hold the Phantom and close the bay doors by herself. Introducing a new Inquisitor should be a little more epic. We should feel scared or worried for the rebels. Instead, The Sister did little more than talk way too much, making her a dull character. They also lessened the scariness of The Fifth Brother. He seemed like just another lackey, not a powerful Force user. As it is, it feels like Kanan and Ahsoka could take down both Inquisitors with little effort. I hope to see better effort from the Empire in the future.
