BUBBLE CAN Review: Night Sweats “Evil”

Friday night’s on Adult Swim Canada have an odd addition to their lineup. Night Sweats is a mashup of animated and live-action skits. The animation styles vary and the live-action segments are interesting to behold. Was Friday’s episode worth the watch? Continue on to find out.

This was my first time watching Night Sweats. I expected something that ran in the same vein as Robot Chicken when I first heard about it, and my expectation wasn’t too far off. It’s a random compilation of self-contained stories with over the top humor. The styles of animation vary because the shorts are being made by different independent animation teams. If you’re into stuff you won’t see anywhere else, this show may be for you.

The show uses Youtube to test the popularity of each short before including it in the show, which doesn’t come as a surprise since the entire show feels like a mashup of things that feel like they were pulled off of Youtube.
Credit must be given where it’s due though, this show rolls the dice on animators who are trying to make it in the industry, and perhaps Night Sweats can be a breeding ground for some of television’s next great animated shows.

Of course, all humor is subjective, but much of the show fell flat for me. The animation styles were awesome, but the writing was awful in almost every sketch. Many of them tried to throw as much at the wall as possible, but nothing really stuck. If you’re into random comedy, rapid-fire dialogue and anything considered strange, you may love this show.

The live-action segments with the hosts, Bart Batchelor, and Chris Nielsen weren’t pleasant. They balanced on the fence between annoying and obnoxious and by the end of the episode, I think they fell into the yard of obnoxiousness. There was screaming, weird Hannibal like meat masks and incoherent cuts. It was all over the place. Once again, if you’re into strange and rapid style comedy, I can’t recommend this enough.

On a positive note, the final animated sketch “Don’t Feed the Humans” was interesting. It seems it will be an ongoing series on the show and its style of comedy was a little more up my ally. Sarcastic banter between different characters in a weird situation. It wasn’t as rapid as the rest of the show and I found the pacing a much tighter in this final segment.

Overall, this wasn’t a great episode. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes from the show next because I always love seeing something new, and Night Sweats is the perfect platform to always be showing new and interesting things. Things didn’t quite connect with me this time, but maybe I’ll warm up to it. One can only hope.
