Review: The Awesomes ‘People vs. Perfect Man’
Spoilers Below:
The episode began with The Awesomes discussing the need for a new member to replace Hotwire, since seven superheroes are required in order to continue receiving government funding. Just as Prock was reluctantly welcoming back Perfect Man, Joyce Mandrake came in and placed the latter superhero under arrest for treason.
Prock chose to defend Perfect Man at his trial, and went up against Prosecutor Jaclyn Stone (played by Amy Pohler.) Stone tricked Perfect Man into falsely admitting his own guilt and the judge and jury both found him guilty almost immediately (“That’s not supposed to happen until later, but sure, why not? Guilty!”)
Perfect Man was sentenced to 500 years in the Pharmacy Zone, an alternative dimension where criminals too dangerous for prison spend their time waiting in line forever at a pharmacy. (“I’m sorry, I can’t find your insurance in our database.”)
The Awesomes hatched a plan to spring him from prison, while Prock went on a date with Jaclyn to establish an alibi. Despite getting in an argument with each other because of their incompatibility, the two passionately made out & hooked up.
The rest of the team successfully returned back to base thanks to Concierge’s quick thinking. It was then decided that she would become the seventh member of The Awesomes.
In Case You Missed It:
1) Muscleman’s “dead” speech at the beginning was a hilarious start to the episode.
2) Jaclyn’s slogan is “I’ll sue their d**** off.”
3) Hotwire/Metal Fella learned guy talk from Swingers.
4) Piology = The study of pies.
5) The jury consisted of Dutch people, the French (obviously), an Argentinian, a Pacific Islander, an Atlantic Islander (which is like Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard), and Asians. One of the jurors was clearly Tina Fey.
6) Despite trying to act like a man as Metal Fella, Hotwire still chose to drink a pinky, girly (cosmo?) cocktail.
7) Although during season one I found Impresario’s mother annoying, I’ve actually grown to like her different incarnations & appearances. I think maybe it’s because she’s nagging him less lately.
This episode delivered a lot more laughs than the previous one, with an ample amount of jokes sprinkled evenly throughout – some of which were pretty hearty.
We also have another sub-plotline to watch, with the developing love triangle between Prock, Jaclyn, and Hotwire (who implied that she does, in fact, have feelings for Prock while she was with him at the bar in disguise.) There was also yet another twist at the end when it was hinted that Dr. Malocchio may not actually be dead.
The balance of plot & humor really helped this episode succeed, and the show is definitely proving that it knows what it’s doing. The characters are growing and changing, and the episodes have this wonderful structure that uses repeat gags to tie every episode together nicely (like the bee superhero only being used in a single instance, but being the difference in the team’s success.)
I also must say that I really enjoy seeing the endless parade of other superheroes that debut almost weekly, and the wacky personas they all portray. I’m curious to see what other far out character ideas the writer’s have up their sleeves.
Although, all things considered, I’d give every hero up for just a little Teleportation Larry.
Be sure to check out new episodes of The Awesomes Mondays on Hulu, and the reviews here the next day!
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
