Boondocks creator issues statement about fourth season…our analysis

So, as most of everyone knows by now, The Boondocks will be entering its fourth season without the services of creator Aaron McGruder. As a result, Aaron issued a statement on the official Facebook page for The Boondocks, and we decided to analyze it because that’s what we do:

As the world now knows, The Boondocks will be returning for a fourth season, but I will not be returning with it. I’d like to extend my gratitude to Sony and Adult Swim for three great seasons.

I would imagine Aaron is still getting paid for the airing of the series in some capacity. That said, it’s good to see there isn’t bad blood between all parties involved.

I created The Boondocks two decades ago in college, did the daily comic for six years, and was showrunner on the animated series for the first three seasons. The Boondocks pretty much represents my life’s work to this point. Huey, Riley, and Granddad are not just property to me. They are my fictional blood relatives. Nothing is more painful than to leave them behind.

To quote a great white man, “Hollywood is a business”. And to quote another great white man, “Don’t hold grudges”.

This sounds like some sort of contract dispute.

What has never been lost on me is the enormous responsibility that came with The Boondocks – particularly the television show and it’s relatively young audience. It was important to offend, but equally important to offend for the right reasons. For three seasons I personally navigated this show through the minefields of controversy. It was not perfect. And it definitely was not quick. But it was always done with a keen sense of duty, history, culture, and love. Anything less would have been simply unacceptable.

The Boondocks have laid waste to Al Sharpton, Tyler Perry, and Rosa Parks in one way or another. Trust me, The Boondocks will be legendary and the series has certainly made its mark on animated culture. If I were to list the top five most controversial animated TV shows, The Boondocks would certainly be there…and I loved every bit of it.

As for me, I’m finally putting a life of controversy and troublemaking behind me with my upcoming Adult Swim show, BLACK JESUS.

It sounds like Aaron not taking part in the series was more of a contractual thing more than anything else. I can’t imagine it being anything creative because I think McGruder is one of the brightest minds we’ve ever seen in television. But, will the fourth season of The Boondocks be as good as seasons prior? Welp, we won’t have to wait long to find out because The Boondocks returns April 21st on Adult Swim @ 10:30 pm ET/PT, check your local listings!
