REVIEW: NAPOLEON DYNAMITE “BED RACES”

Uncle Rico and Napoleon team up for Preston’s annual bed races to keep six-time champ Grandma from winning yet again. Still smarting from a high-school-football defeat years earlier, Rico’s desperate to return to glory, so he persuades Napoleon to cheat.

Every year, Preston, Il holds a big time Bed Race where essentially one person gets in the bed while a teammate pushes you across the finish line and the six-time defending champs Grandma and Kip are already talking trash to Napoleon and Rico about repeating. Having said that, Napoleon really doesn’t care he just wants to have fun, but Rico is taking it pretty seriously, even going so far as to jog throughout town with Napoleon and his bed while sleeping. However, it gets a bit too serious when Rico decides that he wants to cheat to win the race, and guess what…it WORKS!

Being the winner gets its perks too, as Rico is no longer seen as a football loser, and Napoleon gets a bunch of free shit. Having said that, being the loser isn’t all that bad either because Grandma starts acting different around the house. Napoleon gets worried and thinks its time for both him and Rico to come clean about how they won the bed race in the first place.

This week”s episode of Napoleon Dynamite was absolutely off the kilter funny. For one, this was Rico’s strongest episode, but the best was during the bed races all the different models that the local townsfolk built, most notably Pedro’s. During the race was the highlight though, with Kip and Napoleon engaging in a pillow fight, but really it was a fight of one-liners because they were just launching back and forth like they always do. You would think they would’ve run out of jokes at Kip’s expense, but they bury him every episode in the most comical way possible. I also couldn’t help but notice that the writers are almost adopting cutaway gags into their repertoire, but that’s not a bad thing because I don’t believe its overblown. This show is starting to gain traction, and could surprise the fuck out of all of us as its starting to become one of the best new animated series around.
