Review: Dragons: Defenders of Berk “Bing! Bang! Boom!”
So, this is what adolescence is for a dragon…
Spoilers!
Hiccup proves to be smart, when he creates the Thunder Ear. He created it to track dragons that are far away. They hear a dragon, and they go out to find them. It turns out to be the teenage version of Stoic’s Thornado, the Thunderdrum. They fly back to the village, and the next morning, get woken up to the teenage Thunderdrums terrorizing the village. They destroy the Thunder Ear, and wreck Gobber’s shop. Astrid joins up, same as the twins and Snotlout, but no one is able to do anything. Stoic then ends up joining the party.
The Thunderdrums are still going nuts, and it takes Stoic on Thornado to calm them down. Stoic initially says no, but gets turned around when Dagger is mentioned. He gives Hiccup the go-ahead to train them. Hiccup has no idea how to, so controlled chaos happens at the academy. Fishlegs puts down Dragon Root, so they’re calm, if only for a second. Hiccup goes to train them, but he gets knocked across the academy. This is going terribly. Thornado comes in, and the teenage Thunderdrums follow. Stoic and Thornado leave, and the babies follow. This could go on for a while, because they only stop when they find their grown up voice. Again, Stoic stops them. Because of the destruction, Stoic tells Hiccup the babies have got to go.
The gang brings them to Dragon Island, but end up back in Berk. Stoic and Thornado end up with them. Stoic herds them back to Dragon Island, and decides to show them tough love. Thornado stops and turns around to see that the babies are about to get beat by the wild dragons. They head back, and get help from Fishlegs. The dragons keep coming, and Stoic decides that the only thing he can do is set Thornado free so he can protect the babies. This kind of tugs at the feels a little bit, not gonna lie.
For most of the episode, the village is at a major disadvantage. This didn’t really do much for the first 20 or so minutes. In fact, the episode was kind of boring, not to mention repetitive. The last 10 minutes gets going, but it’s rather late. It was rather surprising to see Stoic give up Thornado, though. I think this is the opening for Stoic to get a new dragon like in the books.
This is a disturbing trend in tv shows lately. There’s not much going on, so the shows are just circling the drains. There has been nothing big that screams, “Watch our shows!” This trend continues here and gives us 20 minutes of repetitiveness, and completely diminishes what should have been a big moment when Stoic gives up Thornado. Instead, the payoff doesn’t justify the repetitiveness that got us there. Hopefully, the season finale is put together better than this.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
