English Dub Review: The Laid-Off Cheat-Granting Mage Enjoys a Second Lease on Life “When I went to apologize with a friend who was a shut-in for two years, we were unexpectedly served apple bunnies, so I think she’s been forgiven.”

Overview:

When Rein and Lily return to town, they meet Margaret, whose sister once adventured with Lily.

Our Take(Spoilers):

For a show that is so laugh-out-loud funny as this one, I’m surprised how dark this show gets sometimes. If you’re not expecting it, you could be forgiven for getting a case of whiplash when it comes to the tone of the story. One minute Lily is trash-talking Rein in the funniest way possible, and then the next we’re seeing someone get ripped apart by a dragon. We also got some background on Lily and that girl who greeted them at the end of last week’s episode.

That girl’s name is Margaret, and the reason she hates Lily so much is understandable. While going on an adventure with her party, which included Margaret’s sister, everyone died. Lily was the only one to come back alive, and she has no knowledge of how that happened. Margaret assumes that Lily ran away, leaving her friends to die so that she could survive. Even Lily acknowledges that it could have gone down that way, but with her memory being spotty, she’s unsure.

The place where Lily’s party died is guarded by a dragon, and there is a legendary sword there. Lily wants answers, and Rein needs a sword that can handle his enchantments, so I’m not surprised that’s where they’re going. Lily meets up with Margaret to try to make amends, and she asks to tag along.

At first, I was a little annoyed and confused that Margaret would calm down and be fine with Lily so quickly. I was glad that I didn’t run to my keyboard immediately and gave it some time. Margaret wants to go with them because she plans to kill Lily there, which makes more sense.

Margaret shows up in the OP and ED, so I imagine she’s going to become a fairly permanent member of the group. This is one of those things that annoys me about anime OP’s because they can spoil some things. Though I have to admit it does also make it a little fun because now I’m theorizing about what could happen to make her be friends with Lily again.

Another character teased in the OP is apparently an assassin that the guy from the last episode has hired to kill Rein. Another spoiler from the OP, sure, but I guess if I’m being fair, anime main characters are pretty easy to recognize when it comes to how they look in general.
