Season Review: Futurama Season 14

When Hulu first revived Futurama, animation fans were split between nostalgia-fueled excitement and the creeping fear that the Planet Express crew was running out of delivery fuel. Now closing out its 14th season overall (and fourth in the Hulu era), Matt Groening and David X. Cohen’s long-running sci-fi flagship proves it still has plenty of snappy one-liners and absurd high concepts in the tank—even if this 10-episode batch occasionally feels like a collection of unpolished B-side scripts.

Season 14 kicks off with “Beef,” an episode where Fry’s desperate longing for 1999 leads to a gross-out hot dog eating competition featuring lab-grown meat and a bizarrely horrifying sentient hot-dog man. It’s gross, weird, and unmistakably Futurama. From there, the season navigates a mixed bag of genre parodies, workplace satire, and character-driven hijinks.

The undisputed peak of the season arrives early with “Our Flag Means Medical Coverage“, a razor-sharp half-hour that skewers DOOP bureaucracy and predatory healthcare systems through a high-seas pirate heist. Boasting a joke-per-minute ratio that rivals the show’s classic Fox era, it stands out as one of the funniest episodes produced since the revival began.

However, the middle stretch of the season stumbles when trying to stretch thinner concepts across 22 minutes. Episodes like “Oceans Three” offer gorgeous underwater animation, but the narrative lacks emotional weight or punchy setups, relying on visual flair rather than tight scripting.

Thankfully, the run wraps up on a strong note with “Final Ending: The Last Conclusion“. Rather than attempting to top legendary emotional send-offs like “Meanwhile,” the finale subverts expectations by poking fun at the television industry’s obsession with series finales. By weaving together interrupted stories featuring Fry’s childhood memories with his brother Yancy, Hermes’ bureaucratic dilemmas, and self-aware meta-commentary, the episode delivers a refreshing, low-stakes farewell that sets up the franchise’s next phase.

The Verdict

Season 14 of Futurama doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to. While a few mid-season episodes feel uneven or rushed in their third acts, the voice cast remains in top form, and the show still knows how to blend lowbrow bodily humor with high-concept sci-fi satire. With three extended event specials already on Hulu’s horizon, Planet Express isn’t closing up shop anytime soon—and as long as the writers keep the gag density this high, that’s great news for adult animation fans.
