Review: Futurama “Oceans Three”
Overview
The Planet Express crew sets off on a treacherous ocean adventure
Our Take
As this week’s episode kicks off I’m pretty excited, “Hey!, I say to myself, “Ocean Adventures? What a great idea!”. Unfortunately, instead of maybe an alternate pathway to fun adventures featuring the Futurama crew we get an anthology episode featuring parodies of popular TV shows where water is the main character, largely comprised of classic sitcoms that nobody under the age of 25 is even going to know. All a perfect recipe for one of the more standard entries the show has ever embarked on.
Unlike what the lede suggests, there is in fact no real treacherous ocean adventure. Sure there’s a laugh here and there, but I was really looking forward to the show having some more intense ocean or aquatic adventures done Futurama style. Alas this wasn’t had and instead we get bits that are largely underwhelming and very forgettable.
Futurama is on thin ice with me right now. A largely subdued season with promises of grandeur that really so far feels like a number of B-sides and untitled scripts that are being animated gorgeously but served with no real depth. This show has so much more talent than it is letting on.
