English Dub Review: Black Torch “Deadly Skillz”

Overview

Jiro enters a mononoke’s forest only to meet a new and odd mononoke in the form of a white snake.

Our Take

Picking up from the previous episode, this installment puts Jiro through another tough test as he continues struggling with Rago’s power. The introduction of Ibuki, a white snake Mononoke, was a fun surprise, and her dynamic with Jiro and Monjumaru quickly became one of the episode’s highlights. Their interactions also help reinforce the idea that Jiro’s connection with Rago is about more than simply trying to control his power.

In a separate subplot, we’re given a better look at the Mononoke terrorist Amagi, making him an even more intimidating presence heading into the final stretch. The story is clearly building toward a major confrontation, while still finding room for some lighter and surprisingly sweet moments. However, the pacing continues to feel rushed at times, making certain developments move by faster than they probably should.

Overall, this was another solid and entertaining episode that keeps the momentum going as Black Torch approaches its conclusion. Jiro’s development and his bond with Rago remain the strongest parts of the story, while the growing tension surrounding Amagi keeps things interesting. With only two episodes left, the pacing may be a little uneven, but the series is still setting things up for what should hopefully be a strong finish.
