English Dub Review: Though I Am an Inept Villainess “I Won’t Let You Die”

The Kou clan court lady Tousetsu reports that “Reirin” is in critical condition.  Wanting to save Keigetsu, Reirin is given a certain task by the empress…

Our Take:

It looks like Reirin has hit a snag in attempting to find Gayou, who’s revealed not to be working for Seika.  However, that’s the least of our concerns, as she gets word that Keigetsu is continuing to suffer from Reirin’s sickness.  Again, at this point, she should’ve learned her lesson and switched back to her own body.  Then again, who doesn’t love seeing a jealous villainess get more doses of karma, even though her traumatic past led her down this path?  Of course, knowing Reirin’s well-being towards others, she isn’t going to sit by and let someone die because of her condition, even if that “someone” is responsible for getting her into this mess.  However, to rescue her, Reirin would have to complete a daunting task from Empress Kenshuu: shooting arrows all night.

I’m pretty sure this request was only made for Keigetsu in mind, which isn’t surprising given how much they hate her guts.  Regardless of the scenario, the episode further highlights Reirin’s kindhearted nature and strive to help others, no matter how good or selfish they are.  Yes, Keigetsu’s consequences are now Reirin’s consequences, but the latter’s perky and loyal personality has been helping her get by those predicaments, while discovering the strength she has lost in her own body.  Unsurprisingly, that includes attempting to hit a bullseye, even if it takes her all night.  Even with the show’s “redeemed villainess” and “body swap” tropes, the first half of Though I Am an Inept Villainess still contains several moments in its plot to make its concept more interesting than I thought it would be, especially ones in this episode.
