English Dub Review: Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke “Winter Material Gathering”

Our Take

Picking up from the previous two episodes, Ascendance of a Bookworm continues Myne’s journey as she adapts to her new role, though the pacing this season remains its biggest weakness. Even with WIT Studio’s improved production values, the story can feel strangely disconnected, jumping from major events like the winter lord hunt to more personal developments such as Myne’s efforts to expand access to books. The first few seasons had a more consistent flow, while this one sometimes feels like a collection of different events happening back-to-back.

That said, there are still plenty of great moments that capture the charm of Bookworm. Myne introducing the idea of a library and helping others gain access to knowledge fits perfectly with her character, while her interactions with Angelica continue to be a highlight. The episode also does a good job showing the importance of Myne’s relationships and how much she has changed the lives of those around her. Unfortunately, the new opening and ending themes do not leave the same impression as the previous ones, which had stronger songs and more memorable visuals.

Overall, this was another solid but uneven episode of Ascendance of a Bookworm. While the pacing and direction prevent it from reaching the highs of earlier seasons, the series still succeeds because of its strong world-building, lovable characters, and Myne’s unique approach to solving problems. Even when the story moves away from the simple joy of creating books, it remains interesting to watch how her ideas continue to influence the world around her.
