Treasure Town Reborn: GKIDS Brings ‘Tekkonkinkreet’ Back to Theaters in Stunning 4K
In a major move for fans of avant-garde animation, GKIDS has announced the North American acquisition of the 2006 cult classic “Tekkonkinkreet.” To celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary (based on its original production timeline), the distributor is bringing an all-new 4K remaster to the big screen for a strictly limited engagement.
Directed by Michael Arias and animated by the visionary STUDIO4°C, the film will play in theaters for two nights only: May 31 and June 1, 2026.
The Return to Treasure Town
Based on the legendary Eisner Award-winning manga by Taiyo Matsumoto, Tekkonkinkreet tells the visceral story of Black and White, two orphaned street urchins known as “The Cats.” Together, they navigate the sprawling, chaotic slums of Treasure Town, defending their turf against yakuza, corporate developers, and sinister supernatural forces.
The film is renowned for its Distinctive Visual Style blending traditional 2D character animation with dense, hyper-detailed 3D backgrounds that capture the claustrophobic energy of a city in decay, emotional depth by exploring the complementary bond between the hardened, violent Black and the innocent, ethereal White. It was the first major anime feature directed by a non-Japanese filmmaker (Michael Arias), and it famously won the 2008 Japan Academy Film Prize for Animation of the Year.
