English Dub Review: My Dress-Up Darling “You Can Equip Boobs”

Overview:

Marin and Wakana go to a cosplay event and meet another cosplayer named Amane Himeno.

Our Take:

When romance anime goes down this path, it’s maddeningly frustrating. All of Gojo and Marin’s friends asked them if they were dating. Gojo shot it down immediately, and Marin was hurt because she thinks that means he doesn’t like her. Of course, we see his thoughts, and he thinks that Marin is way out of his league. I wonder when some progress on that front will happen, because if I’m being honest, that’s my only issue with this show. Everything else is A++ amazing! The animation shows that they must have made a lot of money from the first season. It feels like I’m watching a movie so far in these two episodes.

It was fun to see Gojo stand up to two guys he thought were hitting on Marin. Turns out they’re coworkers of hers and don’t swing that way. But I don’t know… I can’t see a way for them to talk about their feelings anytime soon. Gojo is afraid that it will push her away and they won’t be friends or do cosplay anymore. Marin doesn’t think he sees her that way. I don’t have a great answer for solving it, and unlike other shows, I can understand why they are in the headspace that they are. Even so, Gojo staying out on Marin’s balcony while her friends come to visit when she’s sick was dumb. If I were Marin, I would have told my friends and brought him in.

Amane Himeno is a new cosplayer who dresses up as an idol character. It turns out that they’re a boy who likes to dress up as female characters. I don’t know much about this character, but I think that Gojo and Marin’s reactions to him mean that he’ll be a fun character.
