English Dub Season Review: Teogonia Season One

Overview:

Humans fight relentless battles to protect their land from invading demi-human tribes. As his world is engulfed by intense warfare, Kai, a village boy from Lag, joins the fight to defend all he knows. After Kai’s comrades fall one by one and he’s injured, he suddenly recalls memories from another life. A fantasy tale unfolds as a village boy explores a world of magic, mystery, and heroism.

Our Take:

This was a fun take on an isekai show. It reminded me of isekais from the 90s. You know it’s an isekai, but it’s not the main plot. In a typical isekai, the character will take their knowledge from the past world and use it to succeed in the new one, or they will be overpowered. Teogonia has a little bit of the former, and Kai will have a vision of his past life and use that knowledge to do magic in a way others might not think of. Kai gets his ass kicked, though, so that’s refreshing in its way.

Teogonia was a fun show, but like most anime lately, it ended rather abruptly. The source material is available on a manga reading app. I understand that a lot of anime are glorified advertisements for manga and light novels now. But when you enjoy the story being told, it’s upsetting not to get more. Let’s hope a second season announcement comes eventually.

There wasn’t necessarily anything special about Teogonia, but it was enjoyable, and there are way worse shows you could be watching. In a world where we have a lot of sequel shows and isekai with long names. It’s nice to have a show that feels like a normal fantasy. You could do a lot worse than Teogonia, but be aware you aren’t going to get an ending.
