English Dub Season Review: The Brilliant Healer’s New Life in the Shadows Season One

Overview:

Life hasn’t been kind to Zenos. He was born in the slums, and his dirt-poor background has denied him almost every opportunity. After an encounter with a healer, he throws himself into studying to become one and finally catches a break when an adventurer invites Zenos into his party. Zenos is so thrilled that he’s willing to put up with his teammates treating him like garbage. They fail to appreciate his talents and ultimately kick him to the curb, claiming he’s outlived his usefulness to them.

Our Take:

Anime about being a healer has become popular lately, though I would argue that this show is slightly more wholesome than one of those. I’m sure if you’re a degenerate weeb like me, you know which one I’m talking about. I don’t recall healers being popular before that show, but it seems like it’s a sub-genre that’s here to stay for a bit.

Zenos is a decent enough character, but he’s also ridiculously overpowered and doesn’t see why his abilities are so difficult for others. He never got a formal education in healing, but he can do things that the highest level of healers cannot.

It wouldn’t be an anime about an overpowered character without a harem as well. Zenos gets his start by being a shady doctor in the slums. While there, he heals the three slum leaders, Zophia, Lynga, and Loewe. He rescues an elf girl, Lily, and helps one of the law officers, Krishna. Not to mention, his house is haunted by the wraith, Carmilla. All of these women are, of course, attracted to Zenos with nothing coming of it because why would it?

The biggest disappointment of this season was the fact that it clearly hints at big things happening. These are things that we will probably never get to see because, as of now, there’s no second season announced.

The Brilliant Healer’s New Life in the Shadows isn’t a bad show, but it’s not necessarily good either. I’ve watched a lot of anime in the last ten years, and there are some shows I completely forgot that I watched until I see a clip of it or something. I feel like this show will fall into that category as well, unfortunately.
