English Dub Review: Clevatess “The Beast Lord in Captivity”

Hey you, you’re finally awake

Alicia, Clen, and the baby Luna are captured by bandits.

OUR TAKE

Well, if you thought we would go from the big bloody battle of the prologue into something similar, I have bad news. It seems that this series is going to lean more into the philosophical and contemplative analysis of human nature through Clevatis/Clen’s eyes as their band of humanoids get the royal heir Luna to come of age and become the king, hopefully with the intent of leading humans into a more peaceful age than his dead dad wanted. I kinda forgot that part when I was reviewing the last episode because, well, there was a lot of stuff going on in that to get us introduced to this world, so the big driving force for the rest of the series got lost in the shuffle. That first episode also ended with the three of them getting captured by bandits, which Clen either couldn’t fight back against in their human form or chose not to in order to better LARP the human experience. However much power Clen will be able to access and however much tension that will add and even there being tension or not will definitely have an impact on my enjoyment of this series, but I’m interested to see where they land on that.

And the focus of this episode is just our two surrogate moms in the clutches of total scum of the earth, as well as working in some exposition and development for Alicia. Remember that she was brought up as a warrior and has her own special power through a special weapon, which unfortunately got lost in the big doomed battle against Clevatess. Probably would’ve been better if Clen had bothered to bring that along when they brought Alicia back to the land of the living. But while I do somewhat appreciate us being willing to deal with the darker and less fantastical aspects of this sort of world, this is really just a bunch of exploitative cruelty and I am gonna lose my tolerance for it real quick if this ends up being the whole dang show. That said, there are still ten more episodes to go, and I can’t imagine we won’t have some big warm and fuzzy moments to even these darker moments out. It’s just we seem to be starting at a bit of a low point, which is…concerning, to say the least, but we’ll hold out hope for things to improve from here.
