English Dub Review: Tying the Knot with an Amagami Sister “A Tryst with the Gods”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

Uryu goes on marriage interview dates with all three of the sisters, but…something strange happens.

OUR TAKE

Just when you thought this was going to be a normal and benign harem show, we get a bit of a twist right at the end of the third episode. Could this be playing into the idea of the three episode rule where people determine whether they’re going to continue watching something after three episodes? Maybe, but in this case it definitely made me raise an eyebrow, as after Uryu has basically finished doing interview meetings with each of the sisters, he seems to trip and see his life flash before his eyes. Both the life he has lived…AND the lives that could be ahead of him, including marrying each of the Amagami sisters. Though let’s back up a bit and talk about how the rest of the episode was leading up to that bit, and I would say it’s alright. We’re still getting to know these characters at this stage, though while last episode gave us a lot on Uryu’s past and motivations, this gives us peeks at sides to the sisters we hadn’t seen before. Well, mainly just Asahi and Yuna, since Yae doesn’t get much development…which may have been deliberate, as the lack of that followed by the vision kinda makes her more mysterious.

Asahi began the series as the mischievous youngest sister who seemed to always been in control of herself (and also enjoys jogging), though here she shows Uryu that she’s actually still a kid deep down, something she apparently doesn’t like admitting to even though she is fourteen and definitely a child, and therefore absolutely not truly in the running here to be Asahi’s future wife…at least I really friggin hope not. Yuna, meanwhile, shows how she is willing to put herself on the line for what she thinks is a sacrifice for the sake of her sisters and put herself on the grenade that is marrying Uryu. However, she is also just a person who enjoys things at the end of the day (in her case cats) and utterly melts when Uryu takes her to a cat cafe (at the suggestion of her sisters), and so the two bond over how they try to be responsible for people they care about. And then Yae…well, I guess there’s not much to cover right now, though probably on purpose. Regardless, it seems confirmed that one of them will definitely marry Uryu, so now we wait to find out who it may be.
