Review: Family Guy “Oscars Guy”

Overview

Family Guy breaks open its new season with an ode to various Oscar-winning feature-length films. The likes of The Silence of the Lambs, American Beauty, and Forrest Gump get the Family Guy makeover.

Our Take

Let me tell you something if this is your first time reading anything on Bubbleblabber, the company I started almost ten years ago. Whenever Family Guy does these triple-makeover episodes of classic franchises be it pop culture, books, whatever, I get furious…and boy was I mad when I found out in July THIS was the fucking episode that was going to kick off the new season of Family Guy.

BUT…I actually quite enjoyed this one. I really did. Maybe there’s a tad bias because I am a nineties kid and all of these movies (save for American Beauty) were such big parts of my pop culture upbringing that smashing the franchises together with Family Guy was going to just be enough to get me over, but I had a good time with this one.

LOTS of laughs this week, even with some missed ops with jokes. Like, the writers go HEAVY after Mario Lopez in The Silence of the Lambs bit, but Kevin Spacey gets off easy during the American Beauty bit. I also didn’t appreciate the wildly inaccurate historical anecdote Peter told about the formation of Sriracha sauce, but these are really me grasping for straws trying to find the most minor of quips about an episode I actually did enjoy. The show seemed to be a bit of a flash back to the show’s yesteryear in that the claws were a bit sharpened at the behest of Hollywood, so we’ll see if this is a recurring theme through the rest of the season.
