English Dub Review: Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Development Department “The Result of Passions Served up at a Monsters’ Banquet Engulfed in a Sweet-Smelling Embrace of Honeyed Poison While Drowning in Sin with an Avatar of God”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

The development department holds a drinking party, and Camula shows up! The party’s organizer, Kuroitsu, seeks a way to break free from the awkwardness, but that’s easier said than done.

Our Take:

It’s not every day that we see a business corporation host a party on a specific occasion. A party celebrating a promotion or even a milestone can be nice, but one involving some heavy drinking? Oh, boy. That could take a turn for the worst for its reputation.

The first half of this episode sees the Monster Development Development at a drinking party with Camula tagging along because Kuroitsu feels guilty about her. Unfortunately, what seemed to be a harmless outing between employees turned out to be a drunken mess that resulted in them being hungover. Later on, Kuroitsu hangs out with Wolf Bete for lunch while telling him her ambition to be an executive at Agastia.

We’ve seen several pairs of separate misadventures of Kuroitsu and her friends throughout the season. So it felt nice that this episode offered a much-needed change of pace for its structure. Instead of having two different segments in a single plot, the seventh episode has only one interconnected storyline centering on the relationship between Kuroitsu and Wolf Bete. The sequence involving the monsters getting drunk was a fun little highlight that showcases another flaw in the monster designs. However, the rest of the episode with Kuroitsu and Wolf Bete is what I appreciated the most regarding the character development.

Wolf Bete spends the entire second half trying to prove to Kuroitsu that there’s still some manliness left inside his female body. He attempts to do so by fighting the thugs, but Kuroitsu surprisingly got the job done for him with her fighting skills. This moment alone makes this episode my favorite so far because it represents Bete’s constant struggle with his image while being treated as a helpless woman by Kuroitsu. Plus, it’s hilarious to see Bete’s reactions towards being called a “little sister” and a “daughter”. But, more importantly, it further showcases Kuroitsu’s determination to be one of the Agastia executives, which I hope will serve as an essential plot element for the remaining episodes.

Overall, I don’t have to be drunk to tell you that the seventh episode of Miss Kuroitsu is a bit more enjoyable than the previous ones. Because the structure is just one complete narrative, the episode gives the show more time to develop its wacky characters, mainly Kuroitsu and Wolf Bete. This change, along with its humor, is something that I think this show needed to get its arc on the right track. Let’s just hope the rest of the season can capitalize on it before I get even more hungover by its episodic nature.
