English Dub Review: The Honor at Magic High School Episodes 9 & 10

Overview

“Because you were by my side”

The match between Eimi and Shiori begins, with Eimi using the same tactics as in the qualifying rounds to overturn Shiori’s ice pillars so that First High can dominate the rankings. However, Shiori comes prepared, and Eimi is driven into a corner. Meanwhile, Honoka takes on Toko in the Battle Board finals…

“I don’t want to lose”

Kamui strays in outer space during a battle with the Andromeda nation. On the other hand, Takuma and Baku, who jumped into a dislocation point where the destination was unknown by the arc, were floating in a mysterious space in order to escape from the enemy’s self-destruction. Kamui, Baku, Takuma … Three people who look at the same future and choose different paths depending on their causes…

Our Take

For episode 9, some high stake matches were a nice jumping-on point. While the contestants are the ones in the field the battle is also one between the technicians of both sides as well. It’s the trust between teammates that really matters. Eimi’s match looked like a toss-up toward the end but it’s nice that she came out on top. It was great to see Honoka pull through with the win as well.

As for episode 10, while Miyuki had excellent motivation for wanting to shine in Tatsuya’s eyes, Shizuku’s determination really surprised me. When both proceeded to double-team with the high-level techniques, was properly utilized by the two who served to make their match a suspenseful & tension-filled one…

Overall, both were passable episodes that managed to keep the proceedings going on a consistent level. It combined some nice expansion of Emi and Toko’s characters with tension in the form of Eimi and Honoka’s respective matches. I Kinda wanted to see Shizuku win but it’s an obvious fact that it’s impossible for any of them to defeat Miyuki. Also one of the highlights of episode 10 that stood out for me the most was a specific bathroom scene. It was really sad to see Shizuku cry like that. Good thing Honoka was there for her.
