English Dub Review: So I’m a Spider, So What? Episodes 22-23

Overview
“Be Forever, Me?”

The Ohts Alliance has begun its attack. Spider-Lady doesn’t care about the outcome of the war, but she heads to the battlefield for the experience points! Despite her lack of investment, she sides with the Sariella Army in order to earn XP. She’ll need to take advantage of this fighting in order to defeat Ariel. But then, Ariel herself appears on the battlefield…

“My old friend, why…?”

A sword bathed in light, and a sword wrapped in darkness–as Shun and Hugo’s destined clash reaches its climax, Sophia takes to the battlefield. Her appearance signals an intervention by the demon army, and Shun is left in shock at the power she wields.

Our Take

While episode 21 lacked having the Spider-Lady come into play, here we thankfully get tons of her in 22. With all the antics and craziness dialed up. Spider-Lady hilariously plays anchor-woman and reports about the war directly from the battlefield which was the perfect way to start this episode. I’ll admit it was pretty damn funny that she’d treat such a life or death scenario like dangerous on-location reporting, sideways blood rain included. Smart idea for her to join in gaining some experience points since all the carnage is happening anyways. Is it because of The Spider-Lady herself? and arguably Would it have happened regardless? Both yes. So might as well take advantage of the situation. The fight itself was funny from the Spider-Lady’s POV. She once again isn’t taking anything seriously but can’t use magic because of the barrier created by Ariel. Yet she’s surviving through taking experience from the unknown soldiers. On the whole Hugo vs Shun battle was honestly the worst CGI part, and it didn’t help that the animation’s frames were bad.

As for the 23rd episode, it decided to take a rather weird direction by introducing the technological nature of the elven civilization. Up until that point, technology wasn’t a thing in this fantasy universe, only otherworldly creatures, reincarnation, and magic. But here, it was just tonal whiplash and felt kinda out of place, to be honest. At least this episode featured more on the vampire girl and the other guy, which makes it better than the last human-centric one already.

Overall, despite episode 22 being the highlight with more focus on the Spider-Lady, Episode 23 felt like padding. If the fight animations are going to be that awful, at least don’t make us experience so many of them when they lack absolutely no consequence whatsoever. The fantasy world is already underdeveloped as is and this doesn’t help in the least considering the animation quality dropped. This season is almost over and it feels like there is little to no hype for the last episode, I just hope it actually ends with one hell of a Bang for this show…
